What Do Animals Eat for the Lunar New Year? Seasonal Ingredients on the Menu!

Despite Taipei Zoo being closed on Chinese Lunar New Year's Eve (January 28), the zoo's animal kitchen and zookeepers continued to prepare balanced and nutritious meals for the animals, allowing them to enjoy the holiday. Since the beginning of winter, the zoo has adjusted the animals’ diets, providing fresh seasonal ingredients such as white radish, passion fruit, and custard apples, while also increasing food quantities and nutritional calories. The zoo also offered special holiday treats like nuts and dried fruits to enrich the animals' diets.

Zookeepers also introduced new vegetables like cilantro to stimulate the animals’ senses, though reactions were mixed. Notably, the zoo also introduced "green bean red date monkey cake," which is rich in plant-based protein and vitamins, and has been particularly popular with primates. Through seasonal adjustments in the way meals are provided, the zoo’s central kitchen ensures animals have their nutritional needs met while celebrating the holiday with seasonal fruits and vegetables.
